Analysis & Approaches HL practice questions

Analysis & Approaches (AA) Higher Level extends the SL syllabus with complex numbers, further calculus, vectors and 3D geometry, and matrices - built for students planning further study in maths, physics, engineering, or computer science. Higher Level covers the same five units in far greater depth, taught over roughly 240 hours.

Every question below is original and exam-style, with a full worked solution, IB-style mark allocations (M1/A1/etc.), and - where useful - GDC keystrokes for the calculator paper. Nothing is scanned from a real past paper; everything is written to match the current syllabus and marked in the style of IB mark schemes, with method and answer marks.

FAQ

Should I take AA HL or AA SL?

AA HL is a significant step up - it adds complex numbers, further calculus (differential equations, Maclaurin series), and vectors, plus roughly 90 more teaching hours. Take HL only if you're confident with algebra, enjoy proof-style problem solving, and are aiming at a maths-heavy or STEM degree.

Do I need a graphical calculator for every topic?

No - Paper 1 is calculator-free. Papers 2 and 3 both allow a GDC, and Paper 3's extended problem-solving questions in particular lean on it heavily.

Are these real past IB exam questions?

No - every question is original, written to match the current syllabus and marked in the style of IB mark schemes, with method and answer marks. This avoids the copyright and staleness problems of scanned past papers, and means new questions can be added continuously.
